In our lives, we are faced with many decisions, whether they are ones made for ourselves directly or ones that we may make for others that in turn affect ourselves. Two people faced with the same decisions may make completely different choices based on factors including ethics, religion, culture, life experience along with many other competing factors. The two cases below can be used as an example to show how different people can examine the same cases and make varying rational decisions based on their views. Trolley case one involves an out of control cart speeding towards a group of five people stuck on a set of train tracks, adjacent to this track is another with only one person stuck on it. You are standing at a switch that†¦show more content†¦With these two cases, you must examine them using at least two different ethical ideas in order to break down them down, evaluate and be confident in the decision to be made. By treading lightly into John Stuart Mill’s theo ry of Utilitarianism and Immanuel Kant’s theory of Katian ethics it may be possible to gain an understanding of what you as an individual may do given these impossible decisions. Mill’s theory of Utilitarianism revolves around the idea that the most important thing in life is the greatest happiness for the greatest number. But how that â€Å"number† is defined can be broadly based on many things, including who is being counted in the whole, whether it be just humans or if we expand that circle to include animals and other non-human entities. Mill defines â€Å"happiness† as being that which causes pleasure instead of pain, casting a vast expanse of variation for what this â€Å"happiness† may include. An argument to Mill’s theory is that if pleasure being maximized was the ultimate goal then what would stop everyone from pursuing this pleasure in any way they needed too, regardless of others and how it may affect them.
